Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

essaymoment

The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is also known as the stepdown – unit. Often in the PCU, the status of a baby has improved enough but still needs skilled nursing care and monitoring although they are more stable than those in a NICU.
Isolation Room

The Isolation room aims to control the spread of infection and reduced to a level to prevent cross – infection. Newborn babies who are born with infection or their mothers have a history of infectious diseases are isolated in this room.
Observation Unit

The observation unit accommodates newborn babies whose APGAR scores are low, need monitoring, and cannot be roomed-in immediately with their mothers. Assessment is done in this unit to determine if there is a need for confinement in NICU or referral to a neonatologist or other specialists.
Breastfeeding Area

A specific area provided in NICU that serves as a mother-newborn bonding area where they can breastfeed and do manual breastmilk expression during the newborn confinement in the facility.
Receiving Area

An area in the NICU where high-risk newborns are assessed by nurses, pediatricians, or neonatologists. Special procedures like umbilical catheterization and neonatal resuscitation are performed in this area as well.
Treatment Room

The treatment room is used for administering various medical treatments or procedures such as intravenous cannula insertion, umbilical catheterization, preparation of oral and intravenous medications, intrajugular vein cut down, and chest tube thoracostomy among others.
